Play within your limits

Responsible gambling for high rollers: your limit first, help any hour

At high stakes, the limit that protects you is the one you set yourself. Free, confidential help is one call away: the helpline at NRGP 0800 006 008 answers 24 hours a day, and a message to WhatsApp 076 675 0710 starts a counsellor referral. This page is for adults; gambling is 18+ only.

Help lines, free and confidential

The South African Responsible Gambling Foundation runs the NRGP, and its line at NRGP 0800 006 008 is the first call to make: a counsellor listens, asks a few questions about your play, and arranges help near you. If talking feels like too much, a WhatsApp message to WhatsApp 076 675 0710 starts the same referral in writing.

After a first assessment, counselling is free: eight outpatient sessions, with up to two more where a clinician recommends them, and family members can ask for support as well. People who exclude themselves from gambling can get four sessions too.

If gambling has left you feeling hopeless or unsafe in yourself, call the crisis line at SADAG 0800 567 567 now. It is staffed day and night.

Springbok's own deposit limits and self-exclusion

Springbok's responsible gaming page says it will put a daily or monthly deposit limit on your account, and that you can exclude yourself for a period you choose, with one month as the shortest option Verified9 Oct 2026. Neither is a button in the cashier: both are arranged by contacting Springbok.

  1. Reach support

Open the chat in Springbok's lobby or email help@springbokcasino.co.za Verified9 Oct 2026.

  2. Name the limit in rand

Ask for a daily or a monthly deposit limit and state the amount. Pick a figure you could lose without missing a bill.

  3. Or ask to step away

Request self-exclusion and say how long it should run. Choose a period long enough to break the routine.

  4. Keep the confirmation

Ask for the change in writing by email and keep that message, so the agreed limit is on record.

The cashier's per-method maximums are built for the largest transfers a bank allows, far above most monthly budgets. Treat them as plumbing, and let your own limit be the ceiling that counts.

Warning signs when the stakes are large

  • You raise your bet size to get the same feeling a smaller stake used to give.
  • A loss sends you back to the cashier to win it back the same night.
  • You move money meant for rent, school fees, debt or savings into a casino balance.
  • You play longer than planned, or keep the size of your deposits from people close to you.
  • Waiting for a weekly withdrawal makes you anxious, irritable or tempted to play the balance down.

One sign is enough reason to pause and talk to someone. The NRGP line is there for exactly that conversation.

Keeping a budget when the numbers get big

  • Decide a monthly gambling amount before the month starts and treat it as spent the moment you deposit it.
  • Ask Springbok to set a deposit limit at that amount, so the decision holds on a bad night.
  • Set an end time for every session, and stop when it arrives, ahead or behind.
  • Never borrow to play and never treat gambling as a way to fix a money problem; it is entertainment that costs money.
  • Take regular days off, especially after a large loss or a large win.

If someone close to you plays at high stakes

Talk when things are calm, about what you have noticed rather than what they owe. Avoid covering their losses or lending money for deposits. The NRGP also counsels family members, so you can call NRGP 0800 006 008 for yourself even if the player is not ready to.
